LA is burning as people protest after ICE agents picked up and deported non-criminal undocumented immigrants.

I spent a decade working with immigration and border enforcement, so people keep asking me: why don't these folks just quit?

Who wants one of the most hated jobs in America? Who wants to wake up every day knowing they'll inflict fear on innocent families?

My guess? Fear.

Fear of losing their jobs. Their pensions. Their family's security. Fear of job hunting with "Immigration Enforcement Agent" on their resume.

So they rationalize. They tell themselves it's better that someone like them - the good guy with a conscience - does this job instead of someone who truly hates immigrants. Some think they can change the system from within. Most just hold their nose and hope to ride out the next 3½ years.

This is how authoritarianism works. Not through monsters, but through ordinary, fearful people who rationalize tyranny.

The solution? Make it easier for them to leave.
